Vertical Gardens for Today

Unlike years ago, when most families had homes on acreage for farming and city homes had nice-sized yards that allowed for the family garden, today’s families don’t have the space available for home gardening. Vertical gardens are a great solution for the space conundrum, if not to grow produce, then just to have something pretty and green in your landscape space. Garden arbors, trellises, and fencing allow for the vertical garden. You can view examples of these living walls at www.growspot.com.

Hanging baskets are also a way of adding vertical interest to you garden, as well as making it possible to preserve you plants by wintering them indoors. It also allows for more plants in a small area, as well as being easy to maintain.

A vertical garden is just that, vertical. Hydroponics, in many cases, helps make the maximum use of space without the soil. Vining and sprawling type plants, such as wisteria and creepers, as well as pole beans, cucumbers and tomatoes, to name a few, work well for this purpose.

The University of Nebraska website (www.lancaster.unl.edu/hort/verticalgarden) lists the benefits of vertical gardening, as well as giving examples of plant types to use.

The website www.verticalgardenpatrickblanc.com features examples of many small to lush and expansive vertical gardens. They are located in private, as well as commercial locations, and are excellent examples of how small or expansive a vertical garden can be. Landscape designer Patrick Blanc, whose work is featured in his vertical garden site, has locations around the globe that feature his expansive and artistic work. Brad Peterson is another landscape architect whose website makes supplies and ideas available to you for making your own vertical garden.

You can also find planting supplies and ideas at www.gardensup.com/verticalgarden.
